Risk reduction for Lyme disease relies on a multifaceted approach, as no single intervention provides complete protection1

Patients may underestimate that common residential and community settings (eg, backyards, local parks, and playgrounds) can be sites of exposure to infected ticks.2
 
With your guidance, patients can improve their awareness of the preventive measures they can take to reduce their risk for Lyme disease. Educate your patients on the following:

 BEFORE stepping outside3,4
  • Protect: Wear long sleeves, pants, and hats
  • See: Wear light colored clothing to better see ticks attached to clothing
  • Apply: Put tick repellent (products containing 0.5% permethrin) on exposed skin, clothing, and gear
 WHEN outside4
  • Steer clear: Avoid grassy, brushy, and wooded areas
  • Stay away: Keep distance from leaf piles
  • Stay in the middle: Walk in the middle of paths, away from surrounding vegetation
 AFTER being outside4
  • Self assess: Perform a full-body tick check
  • Shower: This should be done within 2 hours of being outside
  • Dry: Tumble dry clothes on high for 10 minutes
  • Check pets: Check dogs and cats for ticks that can be carried into the home

• For children, tick bites occur most frequently on the head and neck
